Residents demand TfL take over Greenwich and Woolwich foot tunnels due to prolonged lift outages and slow repairs.
Residents in Greenwich are pushing Transport for London (TfL) to take over the Greenwich and Woolwich foot tunnels, citing prolonged lift outages—especially the Woolwich north lift, out since 2022 due to vandalism—and slow repair progress.
The south Greenwich lift has been nonfunctional since September 24.
While Greenwich Council says repairs are underway and both lifts may be restored soon, the campaign group Escalate Now argues TfL’s resources and cross-borough authority would speed up fixes, pointing to the Silvertown Tunnel tolls as a potential funding source.
The group has gathered nearly 700 petition signatures.
TfL has no plans to assume control but continues to engage with boroughs.
Greenwich Council emphasizes collaboration with Tower Hamlets and Newham, which jointly own the tunnels, and plans live online updates for tunnel status by year-end.
Los residentes exigen que TfL se haga cargo de los túneles a pie de Greenwich y Woolwich debido a los cortes prolongados de los ascensores y las lentas reparaciones.
