Mazda’s global CFO Jeff Guyton has questioned the global shift to electric vehicles, arguing that zero tailpipe emissions don’t equate to lower overall carbon impact due to fossil-fuel-dependent electricity grids.
Speaking at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, he emphasized Mazda’s focus on practical, multi-solution strategies including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and low-carbon fuels like algae-based biofuels.
The company is also developing a carbon capture system for engine exhaust, aiming to capture up to 20% of emissions, with a test planned in an endurance race later in 2025.
Mazda remains cautious about full EV adoption, citing low demand for its MX-30 and prioritizing affordability, efficiency, and existing vehicle compatibility over a one-size-fits-all transition.
