HAL and Russia’s UAC to build SJ-100 jets in India, marking first domestic commercial aircraft production since 1988.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on October 27, 2025, in Moscow to produce the SJ-100 twin-engine, narrow-body passenger aircraft in India for the first time.
The move marks the first domestic production of a complete commercial passenger jet in India since 1988, supporting the government’s UDAN scheme to improve regional air connectivity.
The SJ-100, already in service with over 16 airlines and more than 200 units built, will be manufactured by HAL for the domestic market, aligning with India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
The project aims to boost local manufacturing, create jobs, and meet projected demand for over 200 regional jets in the next decade, with additional aircraft expected for Indian Ocean and international tourism routes.
