Four U.S. schools win $1.8M for sustainable, mass timber school designs in 2025 competition.
The Softwood Lumber Board and USDA Forest Service have awarded $1.8 million to four K-12 school projects in Portland, Ann Arbor, Lahaina, and Washington, D.C., as part of the 2025 Mass Timber Competition.
The winning designs use cross-laminated timber and other mass timber systems to create sustainable, healthy learning environments with net-zero energy goals, biophilic features, and community resilience, including emergency shelter capacity.
This marks the third year of the competition promoting innovative, low-carbon school construction across the U.S.
