A Dublin man was jailed for stabbing his friend nine times in a drunken fight, despite claiming self-defense.
A 40-year-old Dublin man was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for stabbing his childhood friend nine times during a drunken fight that began as a consensual "mess fight" at his home on January 29, 2022.
Video evidence showed the victim pleading "stop" 36 times as the attacker, Frank Kelly, used a knife after initially striking him with a whiskey bottle.
Though Kelly claimed self-defense, the court found the recording contradicted that claim.
The victim, who suffered superficial wounds and was treated for a possible punctured lung, has since recovered.
Judge Martin Nolan emphasized that the use of a knife transformed the incident into a serious assault, warranting custody despite Kelly’s guilty plea, military service, and lack of prior criminal history.
