Canada's police-reported drug crime rate rose 13% from 2023 to 2024, the first increase in 12 years, according to Statistics Canada.
The national rate reached 128 per 100,000, still well below the 2011 peak.
The rise was driven by higher charges for cannabis, cocaine, and opioids (excluding heroin), with cocaine offenses most prevalent.
Despite the uptick, overall drug crime rates remain 56% lower than in 2014, largely due to cannabis legalization, which cut cannabis-related crimes from 77,000 to 9,000.
The Northwest Territories had the highest rate at 2,591 per 100,000, and Vancouver saw a 35% increase.
Possession offenses dropped over 40% since 2014.
