Australian airports are upgrading security with CT scanners by Dec. 31, 2025, to speed up screening and boost capacity.
Australian airports are accelerating security upgrades to meet a federal deadline by December 31, 2025, with Sydney Airport rolling out CT scanner technology in new screening lanes at T1 and T2 terminals.
Eleven of 15 high-tech lanes in T1 are now operational, allowing passengers to keep laptops, liquids, and aerosols in their bags, boosting throughput to 500 passengers per hour per lane—double the previous rate—and increasing overall capacity by 30%.
Similar upgrades are underway at Melbourne, Hobart, and Brisbane airports, including a new security point at Brisbane’s Domestic Terminal with five CT-equipped lanes and plans for 10 additional lanes.
Sydney Airport also plans self-service check-in and bag drop systems to cut domestic travel time to 15 minutes.
