Volkswagen’s $7B EV battery gigafactory broke ground in St. Thomas, Ont., with production set for 2027.
Construction has begun on Volkswagen’s PowerCo EV battery gigafactory in St. Thomas, Ontario, set to become Canada’s largest such plant with a 90 GWh capacity and space for up to one million vehicles annually.
Foundation work is underway, including concrete pouring and formwork, with Steelcon set to begin steel erection soon.
The $7 billion project, backed by over $16 billion in federal incentives, aims to create around 3,000 direct jobs and 30,000 indirect ones, strengthening Ontario’s auto and EV supply chains.
The facility, expected to start production in 2027, is part of a broader wave of over $46 billion in auto and battery investments in Ontario in the past four years.
