A U.S. Army veteran was sentenced to 4 years in prison for trying to sell classified military secrets to China.
Joseph Daniel Schmidt, a 31-year-old former U.S. Army sergeant with access to top-secret military intelligence at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, was sentenced to four years in prison and three years of supervised release for attempting to deliver classified information to China.
He pleaded guilty in June 2025 to two federal felonies after contacting Chinese authorities via the consulate in Turkey, producing secret documents, and offering access to secure military networks while in Hong Kong in March 2020.
Seventeen days after initial contact, he obtained a work visa to China and remained there until his arrest in October 2023 upon arrival in San Francisco.
Authorities found he had researched extradition for treason.
The FBI and U.S. Army Counterintelligence Command led the investigation, with officials stressing the breach of trust and threat to national security.
