Supreme Court orders responses on petition challenging Sonam Wangchuk’s NSA detention over Ladakh protests.
The Supreme Court has sought responses from the Centre and Ladakh administration within ten days on an amended petition by Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, challenging his detention under the National Security Act.
The case, to be heard on November 24 by Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria, questions the legality of his arrest following protests in Ladakh that led to four deaths and 90 injuries.
The petition alleges procedural flaws, including delayed disclosure of detention grounds and withheld documents, despite authorities claiming compliance with Section 8 of the NSA.
Wangchuk, a climate and education activist, remains in Jodhpur Central Jail.
The court has allowed limited correspondence with his wife and permitted senior advocate Kapil Sibal to file a rejoinder.
The hearing could set a precedent on preventive detention and civil liberties in sensitive regions.
