Scottish SPCA staff to strike over pay, citing inflation and executive pay amid £39M surplus.
Nearly 150 Scottish SPCA workers, including animal rescue staff and inspectors, are set to strike on November 5 over pay disputes, citing a real-terms pay cut despite the charity holding £39.34 million in unrestricted funds and a chief executive earning over £100,000.
The Unite union rejected a 2025 pay offer averaging 1.6%, with a 2% rise proposed for 2026, saying it fails to match 4.5% inflation.
The strike, supported by 14% of paid staff, follows the charity’s decision to opt out of living wage status just a year after adopting it.
The SSPCA says its offer is fair under financial constraints, maintains essential services and its helpline will remain open, and denies the strike will disrupt animal care.
