Over 600 Somerset prisoners were released early under a UK scheme reducing minimum time served to 40%.
Between September 2024 and March 2025, 645 prisoners were released early in Somerset under the UK government’s SDS40 scheme, which reduced minimum time served from 50% to 40% of certain sentences.
The program, launched in July 2024, replaced the previous ECSL initiative and excludes serious offenders.
Releases occurred primarily at HMP/Young Offender Institution Portland, HMP Bristol, HMP Channings Wood, HMP Exeter, and HM Prison Erlestoke.
Nationally, 26,456 prisoners were released under SDS40 during the same period.
Released individuals face strict conditions, including electronic tagging and exclusion zones.
The Ministry of Justice says the move addresses prison overcrowding while maintaining public safety.
