Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg sues Quebec over Aboriginal title to western Quebec lands and seeks $5B in damages.
The Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation has filed a lawsuit in Quebec Superior Court seeking Aboriginal title to eight areas in western Quebec, including parts of the Ottawa River, Gatineau Park, and the Baskatong Reservoir.
The claim, led by Chief Jean-Guy Whiteduck, aims to secure Indigenous rights to manage natural resources like water and wildlife, targeting only government-owned lands.
The First Nation is also seeking $5 billion in damages from Canada, Quebec, Hydro-Québec, and the National Capital Region’s Crown corporation.
The case reflects broader efforts by Indigenous groups to assert ancestral land rights and co-management authority.
