Jamaica enables satellite texting via Flow post-Hurricane Melissa, boosting emergency resilience.
Following Hurricane Melissa, Jamaica’s government has approved additional spectrum for Liberty Caribbean, enabling its Flow brand to partner with Starlink Direct to Cell, providing satellite-based SMS and text services during network outages.
This marks the first such initiative in Jamaica, allowing 4G LTE users to communicate via satellite when terrestrial infrastructure fails.
The move, supported by Energy, Telecommunications and Transport Minister Daryl Vaz, aims to strengthen emergency connectivity, with Digicel expected to receive similar access soon.
Over 26% of Digicel’s network and 20% of Flow’s fibre-to-home customers remain affected by power outages, but both companies are prioritizing repairs and generator fuel supplies.
