Italy may lose up to 20% of its beaches by 2050 due to climate-driven sea-level rise.
Italy could lose up to 20% of its beaches by 2050 due to rising sea levels from climate change, according to a report released October 28, 2025, by the Italian Geographic Society.
The study, "Sunken Landscapes," warns that at least 20% of the country’s 8,300-kilometer coastline is at risk from sea-level rise, erosion, and flooding, with high-risk areas including the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian coasts, Sardinia, the Po River Delta, and the Venice Lagoon.
About 10% of the coastline is already covered by permanent infrastructure, increasing vulnerability.
Without action, up to 40% of the coast could be submerged by 2100.
