Iraq signs deal with U.S. firm to import LNG via floating unit, boosting energy security and reducing Iranian gas reliance.
Iraq has signed a five-year renewable deal with U.S. firm Excelerate Energy to deploy a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at the Port of Khor al-Zubair, enabling the country to import, store, and convert liquefied natural gas into pipeline-ready gas.
The project, announced on October 28, 2025, aims to boost energy security, reduce reliance on Iranian gas, stabilize electricity generation, and support Iraq’s goal of gas self-sufficiency by 2028.
The FSRU, capable of processing up to 500 million standard cubic feet per day, will begin commercial operations in 2026, with a $450 million investment.
The move marks Iraq’s first access to global LNG markets and aligns with U.S. efforts to diversify the country’s energy sources.
