Former Waukegan cop Dante Salinas sentenced to 60 days in jail and 2 years probation for using excessive force in 2019, marking first such conviction in city history.
Former Waukegan police officer Dante Salinas was sentenced to 60 days in jail and two years of probation after being convicted of official misconduct and battery for using excessive force in 2019 against Angel Salgado, an unarmed man at a baptism party.
Body camera footage showed Salinas drew his gun and taser, tackled Salgado, and struck him, breaking his eye socket.
A judge ruled the arrest was unlawful and the force unreasonable, calling the actions unjustified and angry.
Salinas, fired in 2020, is also facing murder and manslaughter charges in the 2020 shooting death of 19-year-old Marcellis Stinnette during a traffic pursuit, with prosecutors saying he was unarmed.
The misconduct conviction is believed to be the first of its kind in Waukegan history.
Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart called the actions a betrayal of public trust.
El ex policía de Waukegan Dante Salinas fue sentenciado a 60 días de cárcel y 2 años de libertad condicional por uso excesivo de la fuerza en 2019, marcando la primera condena de este tipo en la historia de la ciudad.
