A former Arizona teacher was sentenced to 187 years for sexually abusing two teenage students he coached.
Cory Kapahulehua, 44, was sentenced to 187 years in prison after being convicted on 17 charges for sexually assaulting two teenage students while working as a teacher at Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center.
Prosecutors said he exploited his position of trust, grooming and abusing a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old starting in August 2021, with encounters occurring on school grounds, at a hotel, parking garage, and his apartment.
The 14-year-old reported the abuse until his dismissal in January 2022, while the 17-year-old testified about multiple sexual encounters while underage and later moving in with him after turning 18.
Prosecutors revealed he launched an online fundraiser to help her leave her parents’ home while she was still underage.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell praised the victims for coming forward and stressed the need for parents to be aware of risks posed by predators in positions of authority.
Charges included child molestation, sexual conduct with a minor, and sexual abuse.
