DNA links deceased man Emory McVay to 3 1997–2005 rapes in Texas, solving cold cases via genealogy and new testing.
Emory Earl McVay, who died in 2010, is now suspected of being a serial rapist in Bastrop County, Texas, after advanced DNA testing and genealogical research linked him to three sexual assaults on elderly women between 1997 and 2005.
The breakthrough came in August 2025 through the Texas DPS’s Sexual Assault Kit Initiative, which re-examined evidence from the cases.
McVay, a Smithville resident with a history of burglaries, was identified via DNA from a 2004 attack that matched evidence from two other incidents.
Though he died over a decade ago, authorities say the case exemplifies how persistent collaboration and modern forensic techniques can resolve cold cases and provide closure.
