U.S. and AMD launch $1B project to build two supercomputers for AI, energy, and national security.
The U.S. Department of Energy and AMD have launched a $1 billion partnership to build two advanced supercomputers, Lux and Discovery, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Lux, set for deployment in early 2026, will use AMD’s MI355X AI chips and aim to triple current AI computing capacity, supporting research in fusion energy, cancer treatment, and national security. Discovery, scheduled for delivery in 2028 and full operation by 2029, will use newer MI430X chips and focus on high-performance computing and sovereign AI. The systems, developed with HPE and Oracle, are part of a broader public-private effort to strengthen U.S. leadership in AI and supercomputing, accelerating scientific breakthroughs in energy, medicine, and national defense.
