UK's Quadrant department store closes after 144–158 years due to losses and online shopping, ending operations in Chelmsford and Braintree.
Quadrant, a UK department store with roots dating to 1881, has permanently closed its final two locations in Chelmsford and Braintree after 144 to 158 years of operation, citing sustained losses and shifting consumer habits, particularly increased online shopping.
The closures, which ended the chain’s presence across Essex, resulted in 51 job losses and followed a merger with Central Co-op approved by members in May.
Both stores held farewell sales before shutting on October 25, with the Co-op group expressing gratitude to staff and customers and working with the USDAW union to support affected workers.
The Chelmsford Star Co-op name will continue under Central Co-op, which now operates across 21 counties.
