Taiwan blocked a Chinese crab shipment over banned antibiotic traces, part of broader food safety checks.
Taiwan has blocked a 3,915-kg shipment of Chinese mitten crabs after detecting sulfadiazine, a banned antibiotic, at 0.04 ppm—above safety limits.
The crabs, imported by Ruiheng International Trade Co., will be destroyed or returned.
This is the first failed batch among three tested this year, as Taiwan maintains 100% inspection of Chinese mitten crabs since 2007.
The contamination raises concerns over antibiotic resistance.
The crabs were among 11 food items flagged at borders, including Australian oranges from Costco Taiwan found to contain the banned growth regulator gibberellin A3.
Those oranges will also be destroyed or returned, and future imports face increased inspections of 20% to 50%.
