A Singaporean dorm manager was fined $7,000 for hosting an unlicensed, extremist-leaning event attended by 600 migrant workers.
Abdus Sattar, a Singaporean dormitory manager, was fined $7,000 on October 28, 2025, for organizing an unlicensed event at Lantana Lodge during National Day 2024.
The gathering, attended by about 600 migrant workers, featured a sermon by Amir Hamza, a Bangladeshi man with alleged ties to a pro-Al-Qaeda group, who expressed hostility toward differing political and religious views.
Sattar, who invited Hamza via WhatsApp and promoted the event through a digital poster, faced charges under the Public Order Act and Public Entertainments Act.
No security was present, and the event lacked proper permits.
Authorities were alerted anonymously, leading to charges in March.
SBM Electrical & Automation, the dormitory’s operator, was fined $20,000 for failing to maintain visitor records.
The Ministry of Home Affairs stated the sermon promoted extremist and segregationist views, threatening communal harmony.
Sattar’s defense cited his intent to support spiritual reflection among Muslim workers, but prosecutors emphasized the need for a strong penalty to uphold national security and multicultural values.
