Saudi Arabia must free 10 Egyptian Nubians jailed since 2020 for peaceful cultural expression, rights group says.
Saudi Arabia should immediately release 10 Nubian Egyptian men detained since 2020 for organizing a cultural event honoring Nubian soldiers in the 1973 war, Human Rights Watch said.
The men, community leaders in Riyadh, were arrested after police questioned the event, held without charge for over a year, and sentenced in 2022 to 10 to 18 years.
On September 6, 2025, an appeal court reduced their sentences to 7 to 9 years, but they remain in detention.
Families only learned of the decision on September 11 due to restricted communication.
The group, the Dahmit Nubian Village Association, is registered with the Egyptian consulate and described as nonpolitical.
Human Rights Watch called the charges baseless and a reprisal for peaceful cultural expression, criticizing Saudi Arabia’s continued detention amid its public image as a reformer.
