Romanian man won’t stand trial for stabbing Australian girl in London, as prosecutors couldn’t prove intent to kill.
A 33-year-old Romanian man, Ioan Pintaru, will not stand trial for attempted murder after stabbing an 11-year-old Australian girl eight times in a random attack at London’s Leicester Square on August 12, 2024.
The girl, on holiday with her mother, was hospitalized with injuries to her face, shoulder, wrist, and neck.
Pintaru, who pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing a knife, denied attempted murder.
Prosecutors dropped the charge after two psychiatrists concluded they could not prove intent to kill, failing to meet the legal threshold.
A sentencing hearing is set for December 16 at the Old Bailey, with the victim’s family able to attend via video link from Australia.
Pintaru remains in a high-security hospital in Liverpool.
