A $50 million fund launched by seven foundations aims to combat underfunding of U.S. literary organizations.
A coalition of seven foundations, led by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, has launched a $50 million Literary Arts Fund to address chronic underfunding of U.S. independent publishers and nonprofit literary groups.
The fund, distributing at least $50 million over five years, aims to strengthen support for writers, reading programs, and literary initiatives.
Elizabeth Alexander, Mellon’s president and a poet, stressed literature’s cultural importance.
Jennifer Benka will oversee the fund, with applications opening November 10.
The effort responds to data showing literary organizations receive less than 2% of major arts grants, despite their role in fostering innovation and discovery.
Support will cover poetry festivals, residencies, and small presses.
