Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's governor demands lifting alleged wheat movement restrictions from Punjab, citing shortages and rising prices.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to lift alleged inter-provincial wheat movement restrictions, calling them unconstitutional and harmful to food security.
Despite the federal government’s approval of a national wheat policy allowing free movement, KP officials claim Punjab’s permit-based controls—implemented after floods—are causing shortages, driving flour prices up to Rs2,800 per 20kg bag, and fueling illegal trade.
The province, which consumes 5.3 million tonnes annually but produces only 1.5 million tonnes, relies on daily imports of 14,500 tonnes from Punjab.
Kundi also requested restoration of PIA flights from Peshawar to ease travel and reduce costs for overseas Pakistanis.
Punjab denies imposing a ban, stating checkpoints were for monitoring, not restrictions.
The federal government has not yet responded.
