Most are located in the Amazon, with others in Asia and the Pacific, and they face destruction of their forests, pollution, disease outbreaks, and violent confrontations.
Despite international law recognizing their right to self-determination and land, enforcement is weak, and governments and corporations often ignore their protections.
Experts stress that even accidental contact can be deadly, as these communities lack immunity to common diseases.
The report calls for urgent global action to map and legally protect their territories, halt extractive industries, and prevent unauthorized access to prevent what researchers describe as “silent genocides.”
