Google plans to restart the shuttered Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa by 2029 to supply carbon-free electricity for its AI and cloud infrastructure, in a 25-year agreement with NextEra Energy. The project, part of a broader trend among tech companies, aims to meet rising data center energy demands driven by AI, with power use expected to more than double by 2030. NextEra will fully own the plant after acquiring remaining shares. This effort follows Microsoft’s similar initiative to revive a nuclear facility.
