Former Raiders safety George Atkinson, key to 1970s defense and Super Bowl XI win, dies at 78.
George Atkinson, a former Oakland Raiders safety and key member of the team’s 1970s “Soul Patrol” defense, has died at 78.
The Raiders confirmed his passing in Georgia, without disclosing a cause.
Atkinson played 144 games over 11 seasons, spending 10 years with the Raiders and one with the Broncos, helping win Super Bowl XI.
A seventh-round draft pick in 1968, he recorded 30 to 33 career interceptions, scored on an 86-yard punt return in his debut, and was known for his physical style.
He later disclosed symptoms consistent with CTE.
Atkinson remained involved with the Raiders as a broadcaster and mentor.
His twin sons, George III and Josh, both played college football at Notre Dame; both died by suicide in 2018 and 2019.
