Construction started on converting Newcastle’s historic 1890s Shepherds Hill Cottage into a cafe and restaurant, set to reopen in 2026.
Construction has begun on transforming Newcastle’s historic Shepherds Hill Cottage, a 1890s site once used as a military mess hall and WWII coastal defense post, into a cafe and restaurant.
Funded by a $465,000 state grant and over $1 million in prior restoration, the $850,000 project includes a commercial kitchen, accessible ramp and footpath, upgraded amenities, and heritage signage.
The cottage, part of a state heritage-listed defense group and the only Australian site manned by all three armed forces during WWII, will reopen in early to mid-2026 after final operator negotiations.
