China’s milu deer population has rebounded to 15,000, with over 6,000 in the wild, thanks to a successful conservation effort started with UK collaboration.
China's milu deer population has surged 200-fold since 1985, reaching about 15,000 animals, according to the 2025 International Symposium on Milu and Ecological Conservation in Beijing.
The recovery, launched in collaboration with the UK and starting with two reserves, now spans over 100 breeding populations across 27 provinces.
Wild groups have grown to more than 6,000 animals, forming the world’s largest milu conservation network.
The event, part of the Zhongguancun Forum, drew over 100 experts from nine countries who praised the effort as a global model for successful wildlife reintroduction and ecological restoration.
