Australia will mandate audible alerts on new electric and hybrid vehicles by November 2025 to improve pedestrian safety.
Starting November 1, 2025, Australia will require all new electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid vehicles to have an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) that emits audible sounds at low speeds—up to 20 km/h—to help alert pedestrians, especially those who are blind or have low vision.
The rule, known as Australian Design Rule 113/00, applies initially to new vehicle models and will extend to all new non-combustion-engine vehicles by November 1, 2026.
AVAS must activate automatically without a pause function and is limited to a maximum sound level of 75 dBA.
The government estimates the measure could prevent around 68 deaths and thousands of injuries by 2060.
The mandate follows similar rules in the U.S., Europe, and China, and was welcomed by advocacy group Vision Australia.
