China has launched its 48th naval task force to the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters in October 2025, continuing a mission that began in 2008.
Despite a sharp decline in piracy since 2013, the deployment supports China’s broader strategic goals, including building overseas operational experience, projecting naval power, and safeguarding maritime trade routes vital to its economy and Belt and Road Initiative.
The mission, lasting over 10 months, includes port calls across Africa and the Indian Ocean, enhances diplomatic ties with Somalia, and reinforces China’s growing blue-water navy capabilities, supported by its Djibouti base.
The sustained presence also reflects efforts to counter regional rivalries and address rising jihadist threats in East Africa.
