A WWII hero thought dead in Italy actually crashed in France; his family honored him with a memorial and donated his belongings to a Georgia museum.
A Savannah family has learned that WWII hero 2nd Lt. Marion “Don” Zipperer, long believed to have died in Italy, actually crashed in France just days after his 20th birthday.
French historian Sylvain Ducrot, researching American liberators, uncovered the truth and connected with the family, leading them to a memorial in La Tranclière attended by 300 people, including eyewitnesses.
The family, moved by the experience, donated Zipperer’s personal effects and aircraft parts to a Georgia museum.
Ducrot is writing a book to preserve the stories of American soldiers who died freeing France.
