Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the Garbage Cafe in Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh, during his 127th 'Mann Ki Baat' broadcast, praising its 2019 initiative that exchanges plastic waste for meals.
Residents can trade half a kilogram of plastic for breakfast items like samosas or vada pav, and one kilogram for a full meal including rice, dal, vegetables, roti, salad, and pickles.
Funded by the municipal sanitation budget and located near the city’s main bus stand, the program encourages ragpickers and low-income residents to collect waste from streets and landfills, tackling both plastic pollution and food insecurity.
