Police Scotland has 10,064 active arrest warrants as staffing drops and Labour blames underfunding.
As of September 2025, Police Scotland reported 10,064 outstanding arrest warrants, including seven for murder, five for attempted murder, and 40 for rape, with many linked to serious crimes like assault, drug offenses, and domestic abuse.
The backlog coincides with a decline in police staffing, down to 16,427 full-time equivalent officers from over 17,400 in 2020.
Scottish Labour attributed the issue to underfunding and a shrinking force, urging immediate action to restore police strength and public safety.
Police Scotland said warrants are prioritized by threat level, while the Scottish Government highlighted a record £1.64 billion investment and noted Scotland’s higher police-to-population ratio and declining crime rates since 1991.
