Over 7,900 Indian schools had no students in 2024–25, down from over 12,900 the prior year.
Nearly 8,000 schools across India had no students enrolled in the 2024–25 academic year, down from over 12,900 the previous year, according to Ministry of Education data.
West Bengal had the most such schools—3,812—along with 17,965 teachers, followed by Telangana and Madhya Pradesh.
A total of 20,817 teachers were employed in zero-enrolment schools.
States including Haryana, Maharashtra, Goa, Assam, and others reported no such schools, as did Union Territories like Puducherry and Lakshadweep.
The government has urged states to address the issue, with some merging schools and Uttar Pradesh planning to revoke recognition for schools with no students for three consecutive years.
