NAPTIP has dismantled a child trafficking ring in Benue State, rescuing 26 children and uncovering evidence of over 300 children sold for adoption between ₦1 million and ₦3 million each.
The operation targeted a network led by a 60-year-old orphanage owner linked to a child rights advocacy group, who used a fake “Back to School Project” involving voodoo rituals to deceive parents in conflict-affected areas.
Children, aged one to thirteen, were taken to orphanages in Abuja, Nasarawa, Enugu, and Lagos, where their identities were altered.
The investigation was prompted by a man who reported his four-year-old son was taken without consent.
Four orphanages have been sealed, and authorities are tracing 274 missing children.
NAPTIP’s Director-General condemned the exploitation of vulnerable families and vowed to strengthen oversight of orphanages and NGOs.
