Moeaia Tuai, 63, of Auckland, is on trial facing slavery, human trafficking, rape, and assault charges after prosecutors allege he controlled two young people, withheld their passports, and exploited one by securing a loan under false pretenses and withdrawing at least $78,000 from her account. The complainant testified he created a fake email in her name, took her bank card, and used it to withdraw cash, with CCTV footage supporting the claims. She denied claims he was teaching her to use the card and said she falsely accused another man out of fear of violence. Tuai has pleaded not guilty, and the case is the first in New Zealand to include both slavery and human trafficking charges.
