Malawi is temporarily using contraceptives on lions to control their population and reduce deadly conflicts with humans.
Malawi is using contraceptives on lions in Majete and Liwonde wildlife reserves to manage a growing population that exceeds the reserves’ capacity, reducing human-wildlife conflict and protecting antelope numbers.
The temporary measure, effective for about five years, aims to curb lion incursions into communities and prevent further injuries and deaths, which totaled 19 from January to October 2025 involving lions and other dangerous animals.
Long-term strategies are being considered.
