Kano's Sharia police canceled a court-ordered marriage after the man admitted faking the relationship to avoid punishment.
Sharia-enforcing police in Kano, Nigeria, have canceled a court-ordered marriage between TikTok influencers Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda after Mai Wushirya admitted he lied about wanting to marry her to avoid punishment.
The court had mandated the union following a viral video of the couple kissing, deemed indecent under Kano’s conservative Islamic laws.
Despite initial preparations, including family consent and a government-provided home, the wedding was called off when Mai Wushirya told officials the relationship was staged to evade legal consequences.
The Hisbah board referred the case back to the judge, citing lack of genuine consent.
The decision sparked national debate over personal rights, social media scrutiny, and the use of court-ordered marriages in Nigeria’s northern states where Sharia law operates.
