Lord Taverne, a former Labour Treasury minister and Liberal Democrat peer who served as MP for Lincoln since 1962, has died at 97.
He played a key role in the UK’s decimalisation and introduced the 50p coin.
After leaving Labour over European integration, he won a 1973 by-election as a Democratic Labour candidate before joining the SDP and later becoming a Liberal Democrat peer in 1996.
He was also the first director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
Tributes praised his intellect, integrity, and commitment to European unity and economic fairness.
He is survived by his wife Janice and daughters Suzanna and Caroline.
