A public alert has been issued in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, after crocodiles were spotted near the Old Kollidam River, prompting the Forest Department to warn residents of nearby villages to avoid open water bodies, especially at night.
Heavy monsoon rains and increased water discharge from the Kollidam River—part of the Cauvery system—have displaced crocodiles from their habitats into irrigation canals and flooded fields.
Officials conducted awareness campaigns in Velakkudi, Agaranallur, and Pazhaiyannallur, urging people to stay away from flooded areas.
The flooding has also led to waterlogging in low-lying regions of Cuddalore district, where five snakes were rescued from homes and schools and released into forests.
