BayCare installs U.S.-made proton therapy system in Tampa, aiming for mid-2026 patient treatments.
The BayCare Cancer Institute in Tampa has installed a U.S.-made proton therapy accelerator at St. Joseph’s Hospital, a key step toward launching a new cancer treatment center.
The 32-ton system, built by Mevion Medical Systems, was transported over 1,300 miles and lifted into place using a 400-ton crane, requiring temporary roof removal.
Construction began 13 months ago and is on an accelerated schedule, with patient treatments expected to start by mid-2026.
The center will offer proton therapy to both adults and children, delivering precise radiation to tumors while reducing damage to healthy tissue and lowering risks of side effects and secondary cancers.
This advancement expands access to advanced cancer care across West Central Florida as part of BayCare’s not-for-profit health system.
