Zachary McGriff, 33, has been charged with first-degree murder and robbery in the October 17, 2025, shooting of 46-year-old Shawn Cranford near Gonzaga University, stemming from a dispute over a car title.
Prosecutors say McGriff followed Cranford after he sold him a 2010 Mercury Milan, demanding the title despite Cranford offering $1,000 in cash as collateral.
The confrontation escalated, leading to Cranford being shot in a yard near a halfway house where both men had lived.
McGriff allegedly stole Cranford’s black Mercedes and fled.
His 19-year-old nephew, Marius Velazquez, is believed to have fired the fatal shot but has not been arrested.
