A 53-year-old woman, 30 years after donating cheek swab, is set to donate stem cells to a stranger with leukemia.
Jinah Kim, a 53-year-old Oak Park mother and reporter, learned in October 2025 she’s a match to donate stem cells to a 67-year-old woman with rare leukemia—30 years after swabbing her cheek at a street fair in the mid-1990s.
Registered with Be the Match, her HLA type helped connect her to the patient despite the challenges of finding matches, especially among Asian Americans.
Though the donation process is delayed, Kim remains committed, undergoing health checks and preparing for stem cell collection via a blood-like procedure.
She hopes her story encourages more diverse people to join the donor registry, stressing that one registration can save a life.
