Victoria’s demerit point system faces reform push due to rising fines from speed cameras and unfair penalties.
Former Victoria Police officer and ALP candidate Naomi Oakley is calling for reform of Victoria’s demerit point system, arguing the current three-year accumulation window leads to disproportionate penalties, especially with the rise in speed cameras and lower urban speed limits.
In a submission to an ALP committee, she urged reducing the demerit reset period to two years to balance road safety with fairness for responsible drivers.
She highlighted that camera-enforced violations—such as speeding, mobile phone use, and seatbelt non-compliance—accounted for the vast majority of fines in 2024, contributing to increased licence suspensions and unlicensed driving.
Victoria issued 7,090 unlicensed driving fines in 2024, ranking fifth per capita among Australian states.
The push for reform comes amid growing scrutiny over automated enforcement and its impact on everyday motorists.
