Trump rolls back Biden's pollution rules at U.S. copper smelters, granting a two-year exemption.
President Donald Trump reversed a Biden-era rule requiring stricter air pollution controls at U.S. copper smelters, granting a two-year exemption from compliance for the nation’s two existing facilities in Arizona and Utah.
The original 2024 rule mandated reductions in hazardous pollutants like lead, arsenic, mercury, benzene, and dioxins.
The White House said the reversal eases regulatory burdens to strengthen domestic mineral production, citing national security, infrastructure, and clean energy needs.
The move follows Trump’s designation of copper as a critical material and a Section 232 investigation that led to a 50% tariff on certain copper imports and mandates for domestic scrap use.
Operators Freeport-McMoRan and Rio Tinto did not comment.
