Texas Gov. Abbott appoints Kyle Hawkins to Supreme Court to replace Justice Jeff Boyd.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Kyle Hawkins, former solicitor general, to the Texas Supreme Court to replace retiring Justice Jeff Boyd.
Hawkins, who led the state’s appellate litigation for 2.5 years and briefly served in the U.S. Department of Justice in 2025, argued a Supreme Court case on Medicaid funding.
Though he did not sign the 2020 election challenge, he has maintained a high-profile legal career.
Abbott, who has appointed seven of nine justices, praised Hawkins for upholding the rule of law.
Hawkins will face a retention election in 2026 and is the first former member of Attorney General Ken Paxton’s administration to join the court.
